Leadership in Public Safety: Theory and Practice
Course Hours: 76.0 Hours
Course Description
This foundational course prepares public safety professionals for the critical transition from frontline operator to first-line supervisor. Through dynamic group projects and open discussions, students will master the technical command and interpersonal skills modern leaders need. The curriculum provides applied techniques for managing team performance, resolving workplace conflict, and mitigating civil liability. Graduates will leave with a practical playbook for tactical leadership, stress management, and overall shift wellness.
The Leadership in Public Safety course utilizes a blended instructional approach. Accepted students are notified 30 days before the start date and will receive a detailed Welcome Letter outlining the program. Three weeks prior to the on-campus workshop, participants gain access to the GPSTC Online Classroom. Students have 21 calendar days to complete the 32-hour online curriculum, which requires meeting scheduled weekly deadlines for course exercises. The online component combines group and self-paced interactive modules and covers core topics such as self-assessment, leadership theory, supervisor liability, policy design, and after-action report evaluation.
During the 44-hour on-campus workshop, students will move from theory to practice. This intensive in-person phase relies heavily on open forum discussions, dynamic group projects, and scenario-based exercises. Working collaboratively with their peers, participants will actively practice the interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, and tactical leadership skills introduced in the online modules. This face-to-face environment allows instructors to provide immediate feedback, ensuring students leave fully prepared to execute their new supervisory playbook.
(Note: During the on-campus workshop, students are required to spend approximately 5 hours of training outside of the classroom during the evenings to complete work assignments).
