Patrol Rifle Instructor

Course Description

This course equips firearms instructors to effectively teach patrol rifle operation and marksmanship.  Instructors will train in contemporary rifle fundamentals and will participate in a variety of combat shooting drills. These drills include patrol rifle presentation techniques, safe loading and unloading procedures, immediate actions, engagement of multiple targets, and the diagnosis and correction of common shooting errors. Additional topics include safety, nomenclature, maintenance, weapon transitions, effective use of cover, and holds at ranges of 3 to 200 yards.

Prerequisites

In order to attend, officers must be a certified firearms instructor and a sworn law enforcement officer. 

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for law enforcement officers who possess a POST General (or Level 2) Instructor Certification, a Firearms Instructor Certification, and desire to become patrol rifle instructors.

It is highly recommended that officers have a strong working knowledge and skill set with a patrol rifle, or have attended some or all of the following: Patrol Rifle, Designated Marksman for Patrol, and/or Patrol Rifle Fundamentals, prior to attending this course.

Special Notes

Agencies sending student instructors who cannot consistently score 90% or higher on the Georgia Semi-Automatic Pistol Course will assume the risk that the student might not successfully complete the Performance Exam.

Officers must bring a semi-automatic pistol, an agency-issued duty belt and holster (holster must have retention), a magazine pouch, three magazines, a semi-automatic patrol rifle, three magazines, a sling, ear protection, eye protection, and a hat with a brim. Ammunition will be provided in calibers 9mm, 40 SW, 45ACP, and 5.56.  Students requiring other calibers must contact the coordinator for the correct round count. RIFLE MUST BE CHAMBERED IN 5.56 and ZEROED AT 50 YARDS PRIOR TO ARRIVAL. Zeros will be checked on the first day of class; however, zeroing time is limited.
