Course Description

This course is designed for the public safety instructor who provides administrative oversight and training delivery at the academy level. Course topics include curriculum development and revision, identification of key curriculum elements, and compilation of a comprehensive curriculum that meets POST requirements.


During the course, each student will design and deliver a Curriculum Project. Students will utilize specific adult learning models to develop the teaching points of the curriculum. Students will use the GPSTC Online Classroom to submit all assignments. Students will present their completed Curriculum Project to a Project Review Board at the Forsyth Campus for critique and approval.

The Instructor Training Level IV Course combines in-person learning activities with independent study. Students will establish their own pace to accomplish each curriculum development milestone, with due dates assigned for completion for each phase of the Curriculum Project. The initial block of instruction takes place at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center - Forsyth campus. Following the initial in-person lecture, students complete online modules, independent work, and guidance from the course instructors. Students return to the GPSTC campus for each of the Panel Review Boards.

The course schedule and completion dates will be available during the initial in-person training session in the form of a Program Syllabus. All curriculum development assignments and projects must be completed within 180 days from the course starting date.

Prerequisites

Students must:

  1. Possess a minimum of five years of service in a public safety or related field.
  2. Be free of any ongoing investigation or probationary status with the Georgia POST Council.
  3. Georgia POST General Instructor Certification.
  4. Complete a minimum of eighty hours of documented, verified training after completing the Instructor Training Level III Course.

Who Should Attend

Instructor Training Level III Course graduates who provide oversight to the development and delivery of academy/agency training should attend this course. The Instructor Training Level IV Course will provide instruction on POST-approved curriculum development to meet the training needs of public safety professionals.

Special Notes

The Instructor Training Level IV Course is in high demand. As a result, agencies are limited to one application for each scheduled course. Applications DO NOT roll over into future classes automatically. If an application is not approved, it is necessary to apply to future classes until the student is accepted. Students will receive an email at least one month prior to any online classroom or onsite activities with instructions. Applicants of the Instructor Training Level IV Course must submit a letter of recommendation from senior leadership of their assigned municipality. Applicants are required to submit documentation that validates a minimum of eighty (80) hours of training as the primary instructor.
