Live Fire Instructor

Course Description

This class is designed to familiarize instructor candidates with the compliance requirements of NFPA 1403 Live Fire Training Evolutions and NFPA 1402 Standard on Facilities for Fire Training and Associated Props. Students will learn modern fire behavior concepts and fire attack methodologies. Students will review standards, learn how to prepare for training exercises, demonstrate procedures and techniques for conducting live fire training exercises. Instructor candidates will participate in live-fire, scenario -based training during which they will play the roles of both a student and an instructor. This is a 40 hour, 4 day in person course: 8 hours of online pre-course instruction/course work and 40 hours of in person instruction. The course meets and exceeds the job performance requirements of NFPA 1041 Live Fire Instructor.

Prerequisites

  1. Must be a member of a compliant fire department and fit the requirements as defined in O.C.G.A Title 25-4-2(6)
  2. NPQ Fire Instructor 1 or successful completion of GPSTC Fire Instructor 1 Course
  3. NPQ Firefighter II
  4. Minimum of 4 years of experience with a certified department
  5. Successful completion of GPSTC Structural Fire Control Course

Who Should Attend

Fire Department personnel that may be involved in conducting any live fire training, fire department training staff, and supervisory personnel who may oversee live fire training programs.

Special Notes

Students are required to have online access to complete pre-course assignments.

In person training requires the student to provide a full set of compliant turnout gear, including pants, coat, gloves, hood, gloves, boot, helmet, face piece, SCBA, and SCBA cylinder.  It is highly recommended that students bring at least 1 additional SCBA cylinder.  Neither shorts nor sleeveless shirts may be worn.

This can be a very physically demanding course and students should prepare appropriately.  Students should hydrate prior to arrival; bring water bottle and snacks for calorie replenishment during hands on training sessions.

Because this course is a blended course, students will receive an online assignment no later than two weeks prior to the first day of class.  Each student must complete the eight hours of online training prior to reporting to the first day of class on campus. Failure to complete the pre-course online material prior to beginning in person training delivery will result in course dismissal.  Student will be notated as a failure for the class and receive no training credit.

Every student is expected to participate and complete all practical skills, failure to participate and complete practical skill learning stations will result in the student not being permitted to take part in the final pass/fail performance evaluations.  Student will be notated as ?Failure to Train? and removed from the training course as a student failure with no training credit being awarded.

If it is determined that through medical evaluation that the student cannot safely continue or is in need of additional medical evaluation by a physician, the student will be withdrawn from the course and recorded as a medical withdrawal.
