Succession Planning for Talent, Not Just Title

Course Hours: 8.0 Hours

Course Description

Many organizations are unprepared when a key member of the organization is reassigned to a new position or leaves the organization entirely. This break in the continuity of the organization can lead to struggles both internally and externally.

This course will provide a realistic, working definition of ?succession planning? that is applicable for all agencies and all levels of those agencies. The myths associated with succession planning will be dispelled so that unnecessary work and expectations are eliminated.

In order to be most effective, the succession plan must be viewed as an extension of the recruitment process and a component of the retention process. Agencies are intentional and expend a tremendous number of resources at the beginning of a member?s career. Yet, this intentionality wanes as the member gains time within the organization. This course provides support for and strategies to address this specific issue.

This course lays the foundation that intentional succession planning is a dual responsibility and requires a two-pronged approach. The responsibility for succession planning is shared by the agency and the individual that is part of the plan. The two-pronged approach addresses that succession planning must include a career (skills) side for those who do not desire to attain formal authority and a leadership side.

This highly interactive, discussion-based training is focused on defining the concept of succession planning as well as providing the foundational steps that must be undertaken to devise and implement such a plan.  Through case study, video review, and class discussion, participants will leave the training with valuable skills that will enable them to define, prioritize, and develop an intentional succession plan.
