Course Description
Animal abuse is clearly a moral and criminal violation in our society. Regrettably, such issues can become more of a peripheral concern with the constant challenges faced in today's law enforcement and prosecutorial environment. Georgia law enforcement agencies must collectively identify the issues involved and unify to establish inter-agency cooperation to address this category of criminal offense and develop a united front to ensure effective handling of all related incidents. This seminar will strive to provide attendees with the tools necessary to establish an effective community and justice system response to animal cruelty and fighting investigations. Course objectives will include:
- Identifying the fundamentals of animal abuse and other violent crime.
- Establishing the link between Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and animal cruelty.
- Reviewing Georgia laws related to animal cruelty and fighting.
- Discussing best practices for evidence collection and case-building.
- Reviewing seizure and prosecution considerations.
- Examining the key components of dogfighting investigations.
- Examining the key components of cockfighting examinations.

This course should be attended by any enforcement agent or prosecutor tasked with the investigation or litigation of any criminal conduct that may become connected to animal abuse and fighting offenses.
