De-Escalation and Control Tactics

Course Hours: 40.0 Hours

Course Description

This course is designed to give the student a realistic approach to de-escalation tactics (verbal and physical), as well as providing them with a variety of skills to use in a subject/officer encounter. 


Topics that will be covered are the Legal Aspects of Force, Realistic De-Escalation Principles, Tactical Handcuffing, Control and Restraint Techniques, Active-Countermeasures to use in a violent encounter, and Survival Ground Skills.

This course replaces the 40hr Defensive Tactics course. 

Training Outcomes

Give students instruction in realistic de-escalation principles and control tactics.

Prerequisites

Students must be employed with a local, state, or federal law enforcement agency.


Applicants must provide proof of completion of a GPSTC-sponsored or agency-sponsored Use of Force and De-Escalation training course (Governor's Initiatives). 

Who Should Attend

Any officer/jailer/correctional officer whose duties involve direct contact with a subject/detainee/inmate.



Special Notes

Students should wear comfortable clothing and bring agency-issued duty gear (minus firearm, ammo, OC Spray, Baton, and/or TASER). Students should bring handcuffs and handcuff key(s).
