Who Should Attend: This course is designed for law enforcement officers. However, public safety personnel from all disciplines may find the information helpful as well.

Prerequisite: None. However, officers are encouraged to have completed Use of Force and De-escalation Options for Gaining Compliance, or other de-escalation training prior to taking this course.

This course familiarizes officers the Autism Spectrum Disorder and introduces scenarios in which officers will practice de-escalation skills and other techniques to effectively engage someone with Autism. Course topics include autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities, escalation and law enforcement?s role, and relevant de-escalation strategies. This course is presented as an interactive online course, and the students will complete activities throughout the course.

Special Notes: This course has been approved by POST as a De-escalation elective. Failure to attain the minimum required score will result in a failure of the class. Should the student choose to repeat the course, tuition will be charged at the rate of $15 per credit hour. Tuition must be paid before the student will have access to the course.
