Who Should Attend: Personnel who wish to complete training to the level of NPQ Fire Fighter 1 and qualify for Certification.
Prerequisite: 1) Electronic preregistration is required for every student attending the class. 2) Physician's Certificate, All students participating in the Basic Firefighter Training Course (BFTC) will be expected to complete prior to arrival for the course, a Physician's Certificate: (Medical Release, Fit for Basic Fire Fighter Training). The Physician's Certificate can be accessed at http://www.gpstc.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/gfa_medical_release_form.pdf. This must be provided to the Course Coordinator prior to beginning the course. 3) Proof of CPR equivalent to the American Heart Association (AHA) Health-Care Provider course. A copy of the student's current "Professional Rescuer" card which includes Adult, Child, Infant and AED is acceptable. This must be provided to the Course Coordinator prior to beginning the course. 4) NIMS 700 and 100 level training. While being required as part of the standard, it will not be delivered in the classroom. Students shall take these classes online prior to graduation.
The Basic Firefighter Training Course (BFTC) is an 8 week (345 hour) course that reflects the new NFPA 1001, 2013 edition standard, as well as NFPA 472, 2008 edition competencies (Hazardous Materials Core Level training) that affect the Basic Firefighter level. The students will be tested mentally and physically in stages throughout the course delivery to ensure competence and ability at the most basic levels of firefighting. During the course, testing will include weekly written tests administered by the Georgia Fire Academy Division, including the weekly test covering Hazardous Materials. Practical testing will occur throughout the course and documented by completion of individual task books. The Hazardous Materials weekly test will be administered on Friday morning of week 7 and will be followed by the GFSTC administration of the NPQ written and skills testing for Hazardous Materials for NPQ ProBoard certification. Final written examination for the Basic Firefighter Training Course will be conducted during week 8 on Thursday. On Thursday of week 8 there will be a graduation at 6:00 pm.
Special Notes: Class Manual: Currently the course manual used is the IFSTA "Essentials of Firefighting & Fire Department Operations, 6th Edition". Each student must provide a manual for use during the program. The student manual follows the classroom power point presentation. Students may purchase a copy of the textbook from The Georgia Association of Fire Chief's by calling 678-686-6239. Students must provide NFPA approved positive pressure self contained breathing apparatus (w/current Hydrostatic Test date) and full NFPA approved, structural firefighter protective clothing to include boots, coat, pants, gloves, helmet, and hood. It is strongly recommended that the department issued uniform be worn during the program. Sleeveless shirts and shorts/cutoff pants are not allowed. Professional appearance is required of all students attending the Basic Firefighter Training Course (BFTC). Additional rules of conduct will be provided on day one.
