Georgia Fire and Life Safety Educator Level I

Course Description

This course is designed to provide public safety personnel with the necessary tools to present fire and life safety education to the public and to ultimately reduce the loss of life and property from fire.  Students will gain knowledge and skills to present effective, stimulating and behavioral changing public education presentations to various audiences. Students will explore the myths and realities of fire, human behavior during fire emergencies and strategies to effectively reach a variety of audiences. Methods of delivering fire and life safety education, selecting educational materials, working with the media and evaluating program success will also be covered. This course meets the state of Georgia and the National certification criteria for Fire and Life Safety Educator Level I. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to take the Georgia Firefighters Standards and Training Council's test for State Certification and submit application for the NFPA 1035 Professional Qualifications for Public Fire and Life Safety Educator Level I.

Who Should Attend

Public safety personnel who have the responsibility of presenting fire and life safety education to the public. 

Special Notes

It is recommended that students have a copy of the Jones and Bartlett Fire and Life Safety Educator Principles and Practices textbook (Second Edition), a printed copy of the note-taking guide provided for this class, a writing instrument, a USB flash drive, and a laptop computer. Students should have a working knowledge of computers and A/V equipment commonly used in the delivery of presentations.  Due to student assignment responsibilities outside the classroom, it is recommended that the student plan to stay on campus the nights of day 3 and/or day 4 to devote all their attention to preparing for the end of course written and performance exams.
