Basic Volunteer Firefighter with Live Fire

Course Description

The Basic Volunteer Firefighter with Live Fire course is a 95 hour course developed to address a portion of the new fire-related performance objectives in NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 2013 edition. The course content also reflects the specific pre-requisite basic training knowledge, skills and abilities that shall be completed before participating in any live fire training evolutions that are addressed in NFPA 1403, Standard on Live Fire Training Evolutions, 2018 edition. 


This course also meets the current mandatory training for volunteer firefighters who will be serving in a response and mitigation capacity required by Georgia Firefighters Standard and Training Council. The course targets those individuals who have the desire to become a registered volunteer firefighter in the State of Georgia. The purpose and goal of the course is to not only meet the minimum training requirements mandated by GFSTC, but to meet the needs of local and municipal communities utilizing the services of a volunteer fire department.

Prerequisites

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, and hold membership in a compliant Georgia Fire Department.  


All students participating in the Basic Volunteer Firefighter with Live Fire course will be expected to complete, and prior to arrival for the course, provide to the Course Coordinator a Physician's Certificate (Medical Release, Fit for Basic Fire Fighter Training). It is strongly recommended that the certificate be considered when the Physician is issuing the release.

Who Should Attend

This is the course for new volunteer firefighters. Any individual meeting the prerequisites who wishes to obtain the minimum level of training for active volunteer service within a compliant Georgia Volunteer Fire Department may attend.

Special Notes

Class Manual: Currently the course manual used is the IFSTA 6th Edition: Essentials of Firefighting & Fire Department Operations. Each student must provide a manual and its study guide for use during the program. The student manual follows the classroom power point presentation. Students may purchase a copy from The Georgia Fire Chiefs Association at www.gafc.org (click on Training Materials icon). Equipment Needs: Students must provide NFPA approved positive pressure self contained breathing apparatus and full NFPA approved, structural firefighter protective clothing to include boots, coat, pants, gloves, helmet, and hood. 

Sleeveless shirts and shorts/cutoff pants are not allowed. Professional appearance is required of all students attending the Basic Volunteer Firefighter with Live Fire. Additional rules of conduct will be provided on day one.
