Who Should Attend: Personnel who wish to complete training to the level of NPQ Fire Fighter 1 and qualify for Certification.

Prerequisite: 1. Student Authorization is required for every student attending a class. 2. Physicianís Certificate - All students participating in the Basic Firefighter Training Course (BFTC) will be expected to complete, prior to arrival for the course, a ďPhysicianís CertificateĒ: (Medical Release, Fit for Basic Fire Fighter Training). Please click here for the Physican's Certificate. This must be provided to the Course Coordinator prior to beginning the course. 3. Proof of CPR equivalent to the American Heart Association (AHA) Health-Care Provider course. A copy of the student's current "Professional Rescuer" card which includes Adult, Child, Infant and AED is acceptable. 4. NIMS 700 and 100 level training. While being required as part of the standard, it will not be delivered in the classroom. Students should take these classes online prior to graduation.

The Basic Firefighter Training Course (BFTC) is an 8-week (340 hour) course that reflects the new NFPA 1001, 2008 edition standard, as well as NFPA 472 competencies (Hazardous Materials Core Level training) that affect the Basic Firefighter level. The students will be tested mentally and physically in stages throughout the course delivery to ensure competence and ability at the most basic levels of firefighting. At the end of the course delivery, a day will be set aside by the GPSTC to allow for the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council (GFSTC) to administer the NPQ Firefighter I skills testing. The NPQ testing is optional and at the discretion of the student or their department. The State Certification test will be offered by the GFSTC on the last day of the BFTC course, but is not part of the pass/fail criteria of the BFTC. Course Graduation will be conducted Thursday evening and the students will be given the opportunity to stay for the GFSTC testing on the following Friday.

Special Notes: Class Manual: Currently the course manual used is the ďIFSTA 6th Edition: Essentials of Firefighting & Fire Department OperationsĒ. Each student must provide a manual and its Student Workbook for use during the program. The student manual follows the classroom PowerPoint presentation. Students may purchase a copy from The Georgia Fire Chiefís Association at www.gafc.org (click on Training Materials icon). Equipment Needs: Students must provide NFPA approved positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus and full NFPA approved, structural firefighter protective clothing to include boots, coat, pants, gloves, helmet, and hood. It is strongly recommended that the department issued uniform be worn during the program. Sleeveless shirts and shorts/cutoff pants are not allowed. Professional appearance is required of all students attending the Basic Firefighter Training Course (BFTC). Additional rules of conduct will be provided on day one.
