Basic Communications Officer Training Course

Course Hours: 40.0 Hours

Course Description

This course is intended for new communications officers of state and local governmental agencies who receive, process, or transmit public safety information and dispatch law enforcement, firefighters, medical or emergency management personnel. Topics include Liability, Crisis Intervention, Radio Broadcast Techniques, Telephone CPR, Law Enforcement Dispatch, Medical Dispatch, Fire & Hazardous Materials Dispatch, and Communicating with Impaired Callers.

Prerequisites

Communications officers in Georgia must complete an approved Communications Officer application with Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) before being accepted in the Georgia Public Safety Training Center (GPSTC) Basic Communications Officer Training Program. Students must be in good standing with Georgia POST and eligible to complete certification training. Additionally, active agency sponsorship is required.

Agencies are not required to wait for notification from POST that the Communications Officer application is approved before applying for the course. However, the student will not be accepted into a class unless their Communications Officer application is approved.

Who Should Attend

Individuals employed as a communications officer must attend a Georgia POST approved Basic Communications Officer course within six (6) months of the initial date of employment in order to perform the duties of a communications officer.  A communications officer is defined as any person employed by the state or a local governmental agency to receive, process, or transmit public safety information and dispatch law enforcement officers, firefighters, medical personnel, or emergency management personnel.

Special Notes

This course meets the training requirements for Georgia POST Communications Officer certification, Georgia State Telephone Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (T-CPR) requirement, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) required training for the Hearing Impaired caller.
