Course Description

This course is designed for the public safety officer who instructs in performance-oriented training and is responsible for delivering in-service training. Topics range from instructor liability and point of instruction (POI) design, to testing and evaluation of learning. During the course, each student writes an original point of instruction plan on an approved public safety topic and develops the presentation skills necessary to deliver instruction on the topic.

Prerequisites

The prerequisites for this course are: (1) Minimum three years of public safety experience.  (2) Students must not be under investigation by, or on probationary status with, POST Council.

Who Should Attend

This course should be attended by public safety personnel seeking the needed certification to teach adult learners. The public safety instructor will acquire professional instructional skills in accordance with POST Rules, Regulations, and the Instructor Code of Ethics.

Special Notes

Each agency is limited to one applicant per course offering. Applications do not roll over to the next available date. Applicants not accepted must apply for a following course date. Training officers, please ensure a current email address is provided for all students registered. There is pre-course work required for this class. Students will receive an email at least one month prior to the start of the class with instructions. Printed materials will not be issued in class and students will be responsible for downloading and printing the materials prior to the beginning of class. Seats are limited, and no walk-ins will be permitted. Each of these offerings has a two week period of on-line classroom activity prior to arriving for the on-site classroom workshop. Students must complete all on-line classroom activities to advance to the on-site classroom workshop. The program meets the training criteria established by the Georgia POST Council for certification as a Level 1 Basic/In-service Instructor. 

Students are required to bring a laptop with Microsoft Office 2016 or newer software. Students must also bring all completed worksheets from the on-line classroom activities, a ream of printer paper, an external storage device, and a one inch three ring binder. Dress code is business attire or a departmental issued uniform. Shorts, jeans and t-shirts are prohibited.
