Community Policing and Use of Force Symposium

Course Description
When an officer is required to use force, resulting in increased public scrutiny and non-stop media coverage, the relationship between the agency and the community can be critical in a calm and peaceful outcome. Trust built prior to an incident and transparency during the investigation will generate confidence in law enforcement's ability to ensure fairness, justice, and the safety of the public and officers alike.
This half-day symposium will review relevant use of force statutory and case law, provide an overview of de-escalation techniques, and offer suggestions for building positive relationships with the public.

Law Enforcement Officers and support personnel.
Special Notes
This course has been approved by P.O.S.T. Council as meeting the requirements for Community Policing, Use of Force, and De-escalation credit under the Governor's Initiative mandate. 2 hours of credit will be applied to the Community Policing requirement, 1 hour to Use of Force, and 1 hour to De-escalation, allowing officers to complete all Governor's Initiative requirements in this one course.
Courses are being offered twice per day. Officers only need to register for and attend either the morning or afternoon session, not both.
