Basic Firefighter Training Course

Course Hours: 428.0 Hours

Course Description

The Basic Firefighter Training Course (BFTC) is a 10 week (428 hour) course beginning on a Friday with Day 0 for orientation and overview. The course meets or exceeds the standards in NFPA 1001 (current), as well as NFPA 1072 (current). The students will be tested mentally and physically in stages throughout the course delivery to ensure competence and ability at the various levels of basic firefighting. During the course, testing will include weekly written tests administered by the Georgia Fire Academy Division. Practical skill performance and evaluation will occur throughout the course to ensure competency in job performance capabilities necessary culminating in a 24 hour drill exercise.  Upon successful completion of this course, students will have achieved Firefighter I, HAZMAT Awareness and Operations, Structural Fire Control, and Interior Search and Rescue.

Prerequisites

Electronic pre-registration is required for every student attending the class.


Upon notification of acceptance to the course, the following documents for the following prerequisites will be required for attendance:

  1. Medical Affidavit/Physicians Certificate.
  2. Proof of CPR equivalent to the American Heart Association (AHA) Health-Care Provider course.
  3. NIMS 100 and 700.
  4. Acknowledgment form regarding Student Policies and Procedures, and Student Code of Ethics.
  5. Student information and emergency contact information form.
  6. Official forms, documents, and processes for submission shall be provided to the applicant upon acceptance into the training course.


Who Should Attend

This course should be attended by students requiring Georgia State Firefighter Certification.

Special Notes

Students must provide IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting, (current ed.).  Students must also provide: Positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus with two cylinders; and structural firefighter protective clothing to include boots, coat, pants, gloves, helmet, and hood.  All protective clothing and equipment must be in good condition and meet applicable NFPA standards.  No shorts or sleeveless shirts may be worn.

A Professional appearance is required of all students attending the Basic Firefighter Training Course. Additional rules of conduct will be provided upon acceptance into the training course and on the first day of class.

Students attending the Georgia Fire Academy Basic Firefighter Training Course will also require internet access after classroom hours.  Additional assignments and additional resources are a part of this course and will be delivered through the GPSTC online learning platform.
