Autism and De-escalation

Course Description
This course familiarizes officers the Autism Spectrum Disorder and introduces scenarios in which officers will practice de-escalation skills and other techniques to effectively engage someone with Autism. Course topics include autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities, escalation and law enforcement?s role, and relevant de-escalation strategies. This course is presented as an independent online course, and the students will complete student engagement activities throughout the course.
Prerequisites
None. However, officers are encouraged to have completed Use of Force and De-escalation Options for Gaining Compliance, or other de-escalation training prior to taking this course.
Who Should Attend
This course is designed for law enforcement officers. However, public safety personnel from all disciplines may find the information helpful as well.
Special Notes
This course has been approved by POST as a De-escalation elective. Failure to attain the minimum required score will result in a failure of the class. Should the student choose to repeat the course, tuition will be charged at the rate of $15 per credit hour. Tuition must be paid before the student will have access to the course.
