Hostage Negotiations

Course Description
This is an introductory course designed to prepare the student to conduct crisis negotiations in hostage, barricaded suspect, correctional, cult, or terrorist situations. Key topics include: Introduction to hostage negotiations, crisis intervention, opening negotiations, communication skills, negotiation dynamics, demands - time - stress, hostage negotiations teams, intelligence, legal considerations, psychology in hostage negotiations, suicide, negotiations in correctional facilities, and negotiating equipment. Lecture is supplemented with case studies and multiple practical exercises to develop and practice negotiating skills. Students must demonstrate appropriate negotiation techniques during a performance examination on the final day of the course.

Who Should Attend
Law enforcement and corrections officers responsible for conducting hostage and crisis negotiations.
Special Notes
Practical exercises may be conducted at the Mock Village, located within the GPSTC campus. Not all buildings within the Mock Village are climate controlled. Students should bring professional clothing, appropriate for the outdoor environment, based on anticipated weather conditions.
