Police Counter Sniper
Course Hours: 80.0 Hours
This 80 hour course is designed for officers assigned as a counter sniper at their agency and is a revised/updated combination of the formerly offered Counter Sniper 1 and Counter Sniper 2. The course includes instruction on ballistics, effects of weather, shooting at varying distances, use of cover, rifle care and maintenance, maintaining a data book, and marksmanship skills with a precision rifle. Other class topics include sniper team concept, deployment, intelligence gathering, field craft, communications, tactical considerations, and non-traditional shooting positions. Officers will participate in shooting exercises which feature moving target engagement, multiple targets, decision reaction problems, unconventional shooting positions and sniper hide building. Rifles will not be provided; however, if an officer's rifle should break during the course loaner rifles are available. Ammunition in calibers 6.5CM, .223, and .308 will be furnished. If other calibers are used, officers should bring 400 rounds with them for class. This two week course is physically demanding and officers should be in good physical health.
Officers will learn the fundamental skills needed to operate as a police counter sniper. With this, the officer will learn the primary function of a police counter sniper is observing and reporting intelligence in any scenario they may be deployed in. Officers will learn the importance of blending into their environment and how to go undetected as they perform their duties. In addition and as a last resort, when use of deadly force is justified, officers will be taught to make a complete incapacitating shot from a cold bore of their precision rifle. All of this will require the officer to maintain a data book on every shot, whether practice or while on duty, when they fire from their precision rifle. The officer will be given the information and techniques for keeping the log.
All students must be Certified and Sworn Law Enforcement. On the first day of class, officers will be required to produce a letter from their agency confirming assignment as a counter sniper.
Who Should Attend
This course should be attended by officers who are assigned by their agency as a police sniper.
Officers will need to bring a precision rifle with a magnified optic equipped with turrets that can be adjusted without use of a tool. Officers will also need a rifle sling, urban and rural camouflage, eye protection, ear protection, hat with a brim and all related call out gear. Officers should bring a shooting tri-pod if they have one issued to them or have one available. Agencies sending officers should provide them with a rifle that already has the optic mounted before arriving for class and is in good working condition.
