Georgia Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Training for 9-1-1 Telecommunicators

Course Hours: 20.0 Hours

Course Description

The Georgia Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Training for 9-1-1 Telecommunicators is an interactive blended learning course that is designed to present telecommunicators with advanced training in handling crisis calls involving consumers with mental illnesses, neurodevelopmental disabilities, and/or who are suicidal.  Components of this course include, but are not limited to, topics such as the CIT Memphis Model, stigma, mental health disorders, mental health resources, suicide intervention, de-escalation, effective telephone communications strategies, effective radio dispatch techniques, and telecommunicator self-care.

Students will view a video presentation depicting what it is like to live with a mental illness, and participate in a variety of practical exercises, followed by an in-class performance examination. While this course is a companion course to the Georgia Crisis Intervention Team Training course for law enforcement officers, it is specifically designed for 9-1-1 telecommunicators who are the "first," first responders.

Prerequisites

Priority acceptance will be granted to telecommunicators who work for state and local 911 centers/emergency communications centers, and are POST-certified communications officers, in compliance with O.C.G.A. 35-8-23 to attend this course.

Federal and military emergency communications/911 officers within Georgia, who are not currently required to be certified under O.C.G.A. 35-8-23, may attend this training on a space available, tuition basis. 911 Directors, who are not mandated to train under O.C.G.A. 35-8-23, may also attend this training on a space available basis.

Who Should Attend

This course should be attended by all Public Safety Telecommunicators.

Special Notes

Because this course is an interactive blended course, students will have one week to access and complete the 4.5 hours of online training. All online course modules must be completed within the one-week time frame but do not have to be completed all at one time. The student will then attend the final two days of the course, in-person at the location indicated. THE COMPLETION OF THE ONLINE PORTION OF THIS COURSE IS REQUIRED PRIOR TO ATTENDING IN-PERSON TRAINING.

The agency maximum is two (2) students each class offering. No more than two (2) students per agency will be accepted (with the exception of the hosting agency).

Students MUST log into the online classroom on the first day of the course to complete the Student Code of Ethics acknowledgement form and the student introduction post. If not completed by 11:59 p.m., on the first day of class, the student will be locked out of the course, and will not be able to continue. For record purposes, students who fail to log into the online classroom before 11:59 p.m. on the first day of class will be designated as a no show.
