Given the increasing diversity of our communities, law enforcement officers must have an understanding of cultural differences and how those differences can affect interactions with the public. This course will help officers explore how their own background and experience influences how they relate to others, with the goal of increasing trust and respect between the public and the law enforcement community. Topics in this course include prejudice, bias, and personal experience, in-groups and out-groups, explicit and implicit bias, system 1 and system 2 thinking, and cultural awareness to establish police legitimacy and procedural justice. Students will view four videos along with completing a series of activities and reading assignments.
