Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations - Core

Course Description

The Hazardous Materials: Awareness and Operations Core course is a forty (40) hour course based on NFPA 470 at the Awareness and Operations level. Topics include the laws and standards of hazardous materials, identifying placards and containers, recognizing the presence of hazardous materials, understanding material safety data sheets and shipping papers, and using the Emergency Response Guidebook, risk assessment, basic monitoring, decontamination, estimating likely harm and risks, and determining the options of intervention and non-intervention.

Training Outcomes

After completing the course, the student will have met the sections required that will evaluate their knowledge, skills, and abilities in responding to a hazardous materials incident at the awareness and operations level.

Who Should Attend

Personnel who aspire to obtain Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations Certification will benefit from this training.

Special Notes

Students must provide IFSTA Hazardous Materials for First Responders (current ed.) and a full set of compliant turnout gear to include pants, coat, gloves, hood, boots, helmet, face piece, SCBA, and SCBA cylinder. 

Every student is required to participate and complete all practical skills.  

The final exam will be administered through Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training.  Each student must know their Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training ID number in order to participate in testing.
