Fire Instructor I

Course Description

This program addresses the job performance requirements of the National Fire Protection Agency, 1041 Standard for Fire Service Instructor Qualifications, Instructor 1. The course prepares the program participants for planning instruction, using a variety of methods, teaching diverse learners, and evaluating course outcomes. The course also provides guidelines for addressing the critical issues of safety and the legal issues of training, and it provides opportunities to participate in application activities.

Personnel who desire to become trainers for their organization.

Special Notes

Students will receive an assignment 30 days prior to the first day of class in an email from the course coordinator (the Fire Instructor I Student Handbook).  Each student must complete the pre-course work in the form of a note taking guide prior to reporting to class. 


This is a individual assignment and will be checked. Copies of other students work is prohibited.  It is the student responsibility to ensure the most current email address is on the student profile on the GPSTC system. 

Students must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word platforms to include Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. 

Students will need to provide a personal Laptop with Microsoft Word or compatible software and thumb drive for this course. 

Students will need the following textbook:

IFSTA Fire and Emergency Services Instructor 9th Edition   ISBN: 978-0-87939-696-1

The textbook and the Fire Instructor I Student Handbook will be required to complete the assignments.

The final exam and presentation will be administered through Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training.  Each student must know their Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training ID number or they will not be allowed to test.   Upon successful completion of this course, students will be awarded National Professional qualifications Instructor I credentials.   

Dress code for this class is either departmental uniform or business attire while in class. Jeans and t-shirts will not be acceptable attire.
