Course Description

This instructor course addresses the knowledge and skills necessary for rapid response and early incident management for active shooter events. This course will discuss Instructor Roles and Responsibilities, First Responder Medical Skills, Response Tactics, Initial Scene Management, and Scenario-Based Training Development. Although this course is in keeping with law enforcement best practices, successful completion of this course does not authorize the instructor to deliver any course under the Texas State University A.L.E.R.R.T. program. The instructor having successfully completed this course will have demonstrated the knowledge and skills necessary to develop and deliver active shooter response in-service training, at the agency level, at a volume and frequency not supported by other programs.

Training Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, law enforcement instructors will have demonstrated the knowledge and skills necessary to develop and deliver active shooter response in-service training at the agency level.

Prerequisites

All officers must be employed with a local or state law enforcement agency. The officer must possess POST General Instructor Certification or equivalent. Prior to registration, the officer must have successfully completed ALERRT Active Shooter Response Level 1.

Who Should Attend

Instructor-certified local or state law enforcement officers tasked with developing and delivering in-service active shooter training.

Special Notes

This is a physically demanding course including, but not limited to, the following activities: running, jumping, and long periods of standing. Students will participate in force-on-force scenarios utilizing NDTA; therefore, if desired, the student will need to bring protection such as gloves and long sleeve shirts or jacket. Head, throat, and groin protection will be provided. Students must bring note taking materials such as a pen and paper.  A laptop computer is highly recommended. Students should bring attire for inclement weather, bug spray, sunscreen, snacks, and a refillable water container in anticipation of weather conditions and limited breaks.
